Child marriage in Nigeria and abroad

The Ondo state senator has apologised for supporting child marriage.
This issue has caused controversies in the social media. Many Nigerians still speak on the decision of 35 Nigerian senators last week Wednesday over the approved of Underage Marriage in Nigeria. Nigeria Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde says: “I Say No to the Senate Bill Endorsing Child Marriage”, even Miss Nigeria fights against this manifest.

Under Section 29 (4a and 4b) of Nigeria Constitution says that, a woman shall not be qualified for marriage until she is 18 years of age. The Senate, on Wednesday, proposed to change that provision to ‘a woman is deemed to be of full age once she is married’, irrespective of the age she did so. What importance does this provision have for the welfare of the society? Is the provision for pleasures of some gentlemen, who delight in marrying children under guises of religion, culture and personal preferences?
